Made in Germany during the Weimar Period, Metropolis is set in a futuristic urban dystopia, and follows the attempts of Freder, the son of a wealthy intellectual, and Maria, a worker's daughter, to overcome the vast gulf separating their two classes.

In 1927 Fritz Lang released Metropolis, one of the most influential films in cinema history. Although it wasn't the first science fiction film, it changed the visual codes which film makers use to tell us about the future.

Bruce Pattinson from Total Education Centre looks at the techniques used by the creators of 1984 and Metropolis. He examines how they contribute to conveying the ideas of the texts. Don't forget to visit us for the notes and teaching unit that this lecture is intended to complement.
