Industrial Separation Techniques : Desalination

Year 7 Science

Sydney Desalination Plant

To make fresh, clean drinking water from seawater, Sydney Desalination Plant uses reverse osmosis technology. Water from the Plant is monitored and treated throughout the entire process to meet Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, which makes it among the best in the world.

More desalination is coming to Australia’s driest states – but super-salty outflows could trash ecosystems and fisheries

Sydney Water

Desalinated water from the Sydney Desalination Plant is an important part of how we’ll continue to provide secure, reliable drinking water when drought, bushfires and floods impact our dams.

Desalinated seawater makes up nearly half of Perth's water supply, but how does it work?

CSIRO assessed the possibility of using desalination technologies to support Australian agriculture.
Desalination is a process that removes dissolved salts from:

  • seawater
  • municipal or industrial wastewater
  • brackish or saline inland water, including groundwater.

Water Corporation

Seawater desalination is how we remove salt and impurities from seawater to produce drinking water. Our desalination plants use a reverse osmosis process. Seawater is pumped into the desalination plant from the Indian Ocean and passes through pre-treatment filtration to remove most particles.
