Book Talk- Summary and review of the book Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk.
Annabelle McBride
Annabelle is the main character and narrator of Wolf Hollow. She’s a kind and thoughtful 12-year-old girl living in a small farming community during World War II. Annabelle starts the story as a quiet, ordinary girl, but as events unfold, she becomes more courageous and responsible. Annabelle faces difficult choices and has to grow up quickly when a new girl, Betty, starts bullying her and others. Annabelle’s sense of justice and compassion leads her to stand up for Toby, a reclusive World War I veteran who is wrongly accused of harming Betty. Through her actions, Annabelle shows bravery, loyalty, and the importance of doing what’s right, even when it's hard.
Betty is the antagonist of the story. She is a new girl in town and quickly reveals herself as a cruel bully. Betty picks on Annabelle and her younger brothers, and her lies cause trouble for many people in the community. She manipulates and threatens others to get her way, and her actions have serious consequences. Betty represents how fear and anger can lead to hurtful and dangerous behavior.
Toby is a mysterious and quiet man who lives on the outskirts of the community. He is a World War I veteran who has been deeply affected by the war, and he spends most of his time wandering the hills and taking photographs. Though many people are suspicious of him because he’s different, Annabelle trusts him and forms a bond with him. Toby’s kindness is revealed through his actions, especially when he helps protect Annabelle and her family. His character highlights the theme of not judging others based on appearances.
Annabelle’s mother and father are loving, hardworking, and supportive of their children. They represent the steady, moral backbone of the family. They teach Annabelle to be kind, fair, and honest, and their influence helps guide her through the difficult situations she faces.
These two characters represent authority figures in the community. Mr. Ansel is a strict and by-the-book teacher, while Mrs. Taylor is a more gentle and understanding figure. They both play roles in how the community reacts to Betty’s lies and Toby’s involvement in the story.
