Investigating Australian history : using evidence
by
David Stewart
This book is about both the historical method and the content of Australian history. It offers an insight into how historians use evidence in building up a picture of the past. The book begins with a chapter that seeks to answer the question 'What is history?' through an examination of the nature and types of historical evidence. Each of the following six chapters is a detailed investigation of a major aspect of Australian history, each focusing on a different type of historical evidence - photographs, newspapers, official records, maps, posters, historical geography, archaeology and secondary sources. The student is expected to use the evidence provided to answer questions posed throughout the book. There is an 'Activities' section at the back of the book that gives suggestions on how the material in the book can be followed up. A glossary of words no longer in popular usage or whose meaning is changed is also provided.
