Despite the influx of large amounts of international aid into Afghanistan, getting access to water remains a daily struggle for a large part of the country. The government says almost three quarters of the population do not have access to clean water. As Al Jazeera's Charles Stratford reports from Kabul, even drinking from wells built by aid agencies is no longer safe.
Water is at the core of sustainable development and is critical for socio-economic development, energy and food production, healthy ecosystems and for human survival itself.
