With their impressive city structures and advanced astronomical understanding, the Maya civilization once dominated Mesoamerica. Learn about the Maya's influence in mathematics, how their cosmic calendars advised agricultural matters, and how the legacy of this ancient civilization endures through Maya people today.

The Maya have been an enigma since their discovery in the mid- 19th century. Maya science developed an elegant mathematic system, an incredibly accurate astronomy, and one of the world's five original written languages. This technology was more advanced than similar European technology by more than a thousand years.

Discussing reconstruction of Maya projects to discover lost Maya technological achievements. These lost principles of technology enabled Maya engineers to construct grand cities that towered above the rainforest, water systems with underground reservoirs for water storage, miles of all-weather paved roads tracking through the jungle, and the longest bridge in the ancient world.

For a decade, archaeologists have been racing to study deep mysterious trenches slashed through the soil of the Amazon. Rings, squares and hexagons have pointed to long-forgotten human settlements in a region previously neglected by researchers. But now, the extent of these settlements is finally being revealed. The discovery of 81 new archaeological sites has just been confirmed, which were home to up to a million people, in an area that occupied just 7% of the Amazon rainforest. Could this be the destination of the ancient Guatemalan Maya civilisation? Did they abandon Central America and travel into South America and settle?

The "mysterious Maya" were an impressive civilisation, one of the earliest to settle in the Americas. Although historians don't know why the civilisation failed, they do know that it spanned 3,000 years and had a population of about 15 million people. Established in what is now part of Mexico and Central America, the Maya built great cities, temples and pyramids, and were quite advanced in engineering and astronomy. Students will learn about Mayan religious beliefs, hieroglyphs, inventions, the people, food and culture.
