This is a brash decade of excess, opportunism and expansion. Many old restrictions and regulations are disbanded, allowing new banks and entrepreneurs to flourish, if briefly. The decade closes in the midst of a recession with unemployment exceeding one million people and many families losing homes and businesses.

The '80s was a decade of big hair and a booming economy. Our family experience nouveau cuisine and check out the Atkins and Pritikin diets. Plus, the coming of the microwave means the sharing a home-cooked meal begins to disappear.

The 1980s was a period of glitz, glamour and excess and in the 1990s alternative became the new mainstream. Baby Boomers were raising families and Gen X was hitting its teenage years. MTV, VCRs and video games changed how we experienced entertainment. And the internet was about to change everything.

The bicentennial year marked Captain Arthur Phillip's arrival with the 11 ships of the First Fleet in Sydney Harbour in 1788, and the founding of the city of Sydney and the colony of New South Wales. 1988 is considered the official bicentenary year of the founding of Australia.
