St. Scholastica was St. Benedict’s twin sister. Although she is not as well known as her brother, God listened to her prayer more than her brother’s! St. Scholastica was outstanding for her simplicity and faith. She spoke to God directly, in reverent familiarity, without complex or elaborate ritual.
Learn about the miraculous life of St. Scholastica, a remarkable saint who overcame challenges and performed incredible miracles. Her inspiring story will leave you in awe and filled with faith.
East of Subiaco, and 510 meters above sea level, still stands the monastery of St. Scholastica, spared from earthquakes, ancient and modern invasions, and bombings. Many hermits lived and retired in prayer in this region, giving this valley the name holy valley. Subiaco’s only monastery until the end of the 12th century, under the name Monastery of St. Sylvester, it was later renamed Monastery of St. Benedict and St. Scholastica, and was later dedicated only to the saint.
St. Scholastica, sister of St. Benedict, consecrated her life to God from her earliest youth. After her brother went to Monte Cassino, where he established his famous monastery, she took up her abode in the neighborhood at Plombariola, where she founded and governed a monastery of nuns, about five miles from that of St. Benedict, who, it appears, also directed his sister and her nuns.
Dear St. Scholastica, you were known for your devotion to God and for your love for prayer and meditation. I turn to you today, seeking your intercession and guidance as I strive to deepen my own faith.
Help me to grow in my relationship with the Lord, and to be filled with His peace and wisdom. May I always seek to live a life of love and service, just as you did. Amen.
